Description

Part 1 of 3 of a commission for Ex Squared c:  I've spent a while working and fixing this, during my long art abscence I've developed a new shading style which I found has been a result of a confrontation of the lack of deep shading I've actually used in the past. I think I was quite scared to go into the crazier colours and shades but now that I've actually tried it I do enjoy it! This is a bit more painterly too but I think it's a good change *o* So, as the audience though, what do you think?

ALSO! I've got a few (ha waaay too many) WIPs coming up shortly... so pop by to my livestreams if you have time to spare! Let it play in the background and check in every now and then even, you're more than welcome to chat as well! See ya there ~

ALSO 2: As you may or may not know, I'm a contributor at Anime-And-Manga and we're getting really close to the 10k member mark, as in less than 50 people! It's all really exciting for us admins and to celebrate this milestone, we're hosting an event! We're looking for donations for prizes that we'll give out as awards in our multiple planned activities so we hope you'll help us with it too. See here for full information if you'd like to participate, donate/help out, or just read more

First the good:
The characters overall design and color scheme is great. She certainly has a unique look, mixing flamboyant and casual in a way that isn't too forced. The colors are vivid but relaxed. This creates a balance that exists in both the lineart and the colors. The shading on her shirt, particularly the loose lower part of it, is very nice, and it seems with this and her shorts that your forming a good idea of shading fabrics, which is great! That is one of the most difficult things to master, and while you're not there yet, its good that you are trying! The lines and flow of her hair and collar/feather thing are very pleasant as well.
Now the critic:
Here's the part where I rip your art apart. But that is ok, because my goal is to help you improve and grow as an artist, and I will never be intentionally crude or rude.
I feel that your anime style is holding you back. I've nothing against anime, I love it, but at the same time its all too common a thing to see optimistic artists placing the style and its tropes first, actual human shape/expression/body/etc. last. Your art IS improving, but only as far as the style is concerned. To draw anime well, you need to be able to draw REAL well. You need to understand the real human face, anatomy, and expressions. Otherwise, these limitations will dictate your style and be all too obvious. Her expression is a bit lifeless due to this, a conflict to her costume and pose. She's got those cutesy anime eyes, but they're placed awkwardly on her head, not allowing for any emotion or variance.
The rest of the body, anatomically, is better than your previous works. However her hands are very small, and her right hand is stretched in an odd way. Make the same position with your hand, the connection between the forefinger and thumb is more rounded and flowing, that angle between the digits in this drawing is not there unless the thumb is at a less than 90 degree angle.
The legs are a bit off as well, but the general positioning is ok.

I think your artwork would improve vastly if you start studying the figure and drawing from life. Do self portraits and hand studies. You have an obvious talent, and I hope you don't take my critique as negative, but use it to identify things you can improve on. Noone's art is perfect, my own is far from it, but you can always get better, and the old fashioned way of practice, practice, practice, and drawing what you see, is the only way (with ANY art style).
